Sofa Sizing: How to Pick the Best Fit for Your Body and Space

Selecting the right size is paramount when purchasing a sofa, particularly in Singapore, where every square inch counts due to premium land costs. Tailoring your sofa to meet your family's specific spatial requirements ensures that it not only fits your living space impeccably but also amplifies the functionality and aesthetic appeal of your home.

How to Determine the Ideal Sofa Size

As a rule of thumb, the overall width of your sofa should ideally not exceed one-third of your living room's total area. This balance maintains the room's proportion and ensures the space does not feel overcrowded. For length, the sofa should complement the main wall of your living room, ideally leaving about one meter of space to preserve the integrity and flow of the area.

  • Seat Depth

The seat depth of a sofa, measured from the front of the seat to the back (excluding the backrest), typically ranges between 500mm and 600mm. A depth that's too shallow can leave your legs dangling uncomfortably, while one that's too deep may not provide adequate back support, leading to potential discomfort. The optimal depth allows your legs to rest fully on the seat with your back comfortably against the sofa's backrest. For those who prefer extra back support, consider using a lumbar pillow, especially if the sofa depth is on the larger side.

To find your ideal seat depth, measure the distance from the back of your lower legs to your waist while sitting, plus an additional 5 to 10 cm for comfortable leeway.

  • Seat Height

Seat height is the distance from the highest point of the seat's center axis to the floor. This measurement should accommodate the height of the users to ensure comfort. Too high, and it puts undue pressure on your legs and back; too low, and it may hinder leg circulation. The perfect seat height allows your feet to rest flat on the floor with your thighs parallel to the ground.

Your ideal seat height equals the distance from the bottom of your knees to the floor, plus the height of your shoe heels and any additional cushion compression when seated.

  • Backrest Height

The height of the sofa's backrest should be determined by the area of your body where you need the most support, such as the neck, shoulders, back, or waist. Generally, a backrest height around 600mm is deemed comfortable for most individuals. However, lower backrests can enhance the sense of space in a room, making it appear larger, which might be a consideration based on personal preference and room aesthetics.

When selecting a sofa, consider dimensions carefully to ensure it suits your body type, complements your living space, and provides the comfort and support you need. A sofa that fits well not only adds to the room's aesthetics but also provides a welcoming space for relaxation and gathering.
